The History of Harley House Distillery

Updated: Apr 15, 2021

Hello and welcome to our very first blog post! Harley House distillery is a small batch

distillery based in Seaford, Sussex. We pride ourselves on creating unique products that

showcase our local area and we absolutely love what we do. Here’s a little bit about how we got here...

Sussex Gin and beyond

Starting in the late Summer of 2017, our creative distiller Adam had a passion for producing alcohol and in particular, spirits. Juggling this hobby alongside a full-time job, it was a no brainer that his passion should be shared with others. In September 2017, we took the plunge and launched our very first gin and signature brand - Pure Sussex Gin.

We attended lots of events to share our love of gin with like-minded people. Our first batch was greeted with such acclaim that we sold out in just under a week!

With the ever-growing interest in our gin, we took some time out to visit St Nicholas House in Barbados. (hard life, hey?) Home to a fantastic rum distillery. We learnt so much about the distilling process and came home with a wealth of knowledge at our fingertips.

Since those exciting early days, the fun just doesn’t stop here at Harley House. We have

grown our brand to include a range of gin, gin liqueurs and our amazing original barrel-aged Prohibition rum.

What sets us apart?

Being a family business means we take pride in every bottle that leaves our distillery. Adam produces each batch by hand from start to finish, using water from our aquifer in the South Downs in every batch he creates. This water is thoroughly filtered to provide the purest beginning to any spirit.

We use this fresh water and a specialist yeast to create the initial ferment which is distilled to produce our own unique neutral spirit. This is then re-distilled along with quality botanicals to produce our fabulous gins. All of our products are made from scratch in this way so you can be assured that this is truly hand crafted with love and expertise. We love to shout about this considering how little it is done in our industry!

The bottles have to pass Adam’s strict standards before they leave the distillery, and every bottle is individually labelled and stamped before carefully being hand filled. The final process is placing caps on the bottles, sealing them and boxing them before they land in your hand to thoroughly enjoy.
